Archaeological Report
Harney County Oregon, Range Seeding Projects

Beaver Creek

Beaver Creek seeding was the smallest of the projects surveyed, covering about 500 acres or 200 hectares of land. The project area consisted of two tracts of land from .8 to 2.5 kilometers south of Crane Creek, a tributary to the South Fork of the Malheur River. Vegetation is predominantly sagebrush. Terrain consists of rolling hills oriented in north-south trending ridges with flat to slightly sloping benches. Elevation ranges from about 4000 to 4500 feet. There is one spring within the project area and three others within one kilometer of the project boundaries.

The southern parcel, consisting of about 160 hectares, was surveyed on September 17, and perhaps 18, 1980, by Thomas, Grunbaum, Morrison, and Harning. One lithic scatter was recorded adjacent to the previously mentioned spring, and two isolated projectile points were found. The site covered 1.5 hectares at about 4,000 feet elevation. Tools noted included eleven projectile points, 14 bifaces and two unifaces. This site was rated S-1.

The second parcel consisted of about 40 hectares of land. Two small sites and five isolated projectile points were recorded. The first site covered .025 hectare and only one tool, a biface, was noted. The second site was .06 hectare in extent and included three projectile points. Both sites were at about 4000 feet elevation and they were both rated S-3 in significance.
