The Cooler seeding project consists of two tracts of land that jointly cover about 520 acres or 208 hectares about three kilometers north of the confluence of Otis Creek and the Malheur River. The northernmost tract contains about 160 hectares of gently sloping land and low hills between 3650 and 3750 feet in elevation. Vegetation is primarily sagebrush. The southern tract is an irregular valley between steep hills. Vegetation is dominated by sagebrush but juniper stands occur immediately adjacent to the tract. Elevation ranges from just over 3600 feet to 3800 feet. According to a brief survey report three people may have been involved with this survey, but only Goheen's name appears on the site reports. Field operations were conducted on October 1 and 4, 1980, but other days may have been involved as well. Three flake scatters were recorded in the course of the survey. One isolated
find is also noted on the survey map, but the report describing it is
missing. All three sites were small (.03, .1 and .02 hectares) and tools
were only noted at one site which yielded two undiagnostic bifaces. Each of
the sites was found in the northern tract of land near 3700 feet in elevation
and within one kilometer of Otis Creek. The three sites were each rated S-3
in significance.
