Harney County Oregon, Range Seeding Projects

Devine Ridge

Devine Ridge seeding project covers an area of 1,060 acres or 424 hectares of low relief land southeast of the confluence of Poison Creek and Gradon Creek. The area is covered with sagebrush and elevation ranges from about 4200 to 4400 feet. Both Gradon and Poison Creeks are deeply entrenched with steep canyons. One spring is found within the survey area. The seeding was surveyed between April 29 and May 2, 1980 by Goheen, Loring and Sounart.

Six lithic scatters and two isolated artifacts were recorded in the Devine Ridge seeding area. The isolated material consisted of one projectile point fragment and a uniface. Four of the six sites were less than one hectare in extent, ranging from .008 to .96 hectare with a mean of .387 hectare. Thirteen tools were noted in these four small sites: four projectile points, six bifaces and three unifaces. Two of these sites were rated S-2 in significance and two were rated S-3. The other two sites were only slightly larger than a hectare in extent, one being 1.2 and the other 1.3 hectares. One contained two projectile points and two bifaces and was rated S-3 in significance; the other included one projectile point and four bifaces and was rated S-2.
