Archaeological Report
Harney County Oregon, Range Seeding Projects

Riverside

The Riverside seeding covers about 1,820 acres, or 728 hectares, in area. The seeding consists of gently sloping, sagebrush-covered hills and borders on Warm Springs Reservoir. Elevation varies from about 3400 feet to 3600 feet. There are a few small springs within and immediately adjacent to the survey area, and the South Fork of the Malheur River has cut a steep canyon just to the east. Thomas, Goheen and Loring surveyed the project area on July 29 and 30, and August 4, 5 and 6, 1980. Twelve flake scatters and five isolated finds were recorded.

The isolated material consisted of three projectile points and two bifaces. Nine of the twelve sites were less than a hectare in extent, ranging from .001 to .15 hectares with a mean of .055. Only six tools were observed at these small sites, three projectile points and three bifaces. Each of these small sites was rated S-3 in significance. The three larger sites consisted of one that was 1.2 hectares in extent, with one uniface and "several" pieces of groundstone. Another site was 1.5 hectares in area and included one projectile point and three bifaces, and the largest site in the project, 2.5 hectares in area had one biface and two unifaces evident. This last site was a quarry/workshop area. Two of the larger sites were rated S-2 in significance while the third was considered S-3.
