Irish Surname Distribution StudyUsing the surname index to Griffith's Valuation it is possible to determine where in Ireland a particular surname is most commonly found. For some names this will pinpoint a particular area, while other names are more widespread. If you already know the county of origin for an ancestor, a distribution study will let you prioritize parish research. If you know a couple was married in a particular county in Ireland, and have the wife's maiden name, then comparing the distribution for both names will show where the couple are most likely to have originated. For a more detailed discussion of this technique, see Identify the Place of Origin of your Irish Ancestor. If you do not have sufficient DIGdat points, you can pay for a distribution study.
