Irish Surname Distribution Study

Using the surname index to Griffith's Valuation it is possible to determine where in Ireland a particular surname is most commonly found. For some names this will pinpoint a particular area, while other names are more widespread. If you already know the county of origin for an ancestor, a distribution study will let you prioritize parish research. If you know a couple was married in a particular county in Ireland, and have the wife's maiden name, then comparing the distribution for both names will show where the couple are most likely to have originated.

Different types of studies are available:

1. SURNAME FREQUENCY BY COUNTY - gives the number of occurances for a surname in each of the 32 counties in Ireland. Provide the SURNAME. Price $5 or 5 DIGdat Points
