Letters from Ireland 1882
This series of 58 letters written by Margaret Dixon McDougall (1826-1899)
was originally published in the Montreal Witness and
compiled into a book under the title:
The Letters of "Norah" on Her Tour Through Ireland,
Being a Series of Letters to the Montreal "Witness"
As Special Correspondent to Ireland.
Mrs. McDougall went to Ireland with the particular intention of examening the 'Land Question' that was of such political importance in Ireland at that time. She describes what she finds with a strong bias in favor of the tenent farmers, who were struggling against poverty, evictions and unjust landlords. Along the way she also provides impressions of the landscape, people, transportation, and other features common to most travelogues.
It does my heart good to find the Irish landscape described as being reminiscent of that part of Canada where my Irish ancestors settled --
Had a sail on Lough Erne at the last of April; tried to find words
sufficiently strong to express the beauty of the lake and found none. It
is as lovely as the Allumette up at Pembroke. I can not say more than
that.
