Enniskillen Parish and Town
By W. H. Dundas. 197 pages. Originally
published at Dundalk, Ireland in 1913.
This history was written in a style that genealogists are likely to
appreciate, being packed with names, tombstone inscriptions, and
even extracts from the parish register, and names from the Hearth
Money rolls, clergy, curates, church wardens, the lists of names go
on and on. But the history, political and social development of the
area is not neglected, going back to a time when only a castle
stood on the site along the narrows between Lough Erne and the
Upper Erne, a stronghold of the Maguire clan, often attacked by the
O'Donnell or O'Neill forces. The strategic location of Enniskillen
in central Fermanagh astride the only convenient crossing of the
Erne for twenty miles in either direction makes it the central point
for strategic movement in the area, and makes for a lively
historical narrative.
