Way, way back in the Internet Dark Ages, we are talking about the mid-1990s here,
the tremendously popular genealogy newsgroup soc.genealogy.roots and its associated mailing
list ROOTS-L was a major medium of
communication between genealogists. In June of 1995 some of the members of that
group succeeded in forming a new sub-group for those interested in British and Irish
genealogy, called soc.genealogy.uk+ireland, the associated mailing list was GENUKI-L. Not
too surprisingly, this group found themselves in a rathy un-easy alliance, and the
Irish agitated for their own group - so GENUKI-L ceased to exist in July 1997 when two
groups were formed, soc.genealogy.britain and soc.genealogy.ireland.
Rootsweb has the archives for ROOTS-L and BRITAIN-L and IRELAND-L, but nowhere have
I found the short-lived GENUKI-L. There is even a GENUKI website, but they don't seem
to have the archived messages.
Packrat that I am, I saved all the GENUKI-L messages I received back in the mid-1990s,
but unfortunately most of those were lost to various computer crashes over the years. I
do still have some 4,397 messages from a period of just over three months. These are most of the
messages from late June 1995 to the first of October that year. They include the original
message numbers: #369 (27 Jun 1995) to msg #4993 (1 Oct 1995). Naturally, given the focus
of the group, many of these messages refer to British families rather than Irish, but I'm
sure they will still be a value to many of our members. Of course if any other
packrats out there have more of these messages, we would be happy to get copies.

Note: A few of these messages are essentially worthless, such as 'I am out
of the office' autoresponses. If you encounter such a message, Notify
Us so we can remove it and we will give you any other message from this section free.
