Home of the Brigantes and Caucoi in the second century A.D., this was later part of the region named Uisraigagh or Ossory, meaning "the water kingdom" as it lay between two rivers, the Barrow and the Suir. Most of the county belonged to the Butler clan, though the northern edge was under the control of the McKilpatrick clan. Lesser clans and septs included O'Brennan, Archdeacon, Cowley, O'Shea, Cantwell, Rothe, Archer, Sweetman, O'Dunphy, O'Brody, Shortall, O'Carroll, McBreen, Forestal, O'Phelan, O'Clery and Comerford.
