Laois, variously spelled Leix and Laoighis, was formerly called the Queen's County. Laois was the Irish name for the region. It was dominated in the north by the O'Dempsey and O'Dunn clans, and in the south the O'More or O'Moore clan. Lesser clans or septs included McCrossan, O'Bracken, O'Regan, O'Doran, O'Duff, O'Keally (or Kelly), O'Tracey, O'Mulhall, O'Deegan, O'Brophy, McCashin, O'Lalor, McEvoy, O'Dowling, McCostigan, and O'Delany.
