COUNTY OFFALY (aka KING'S COUNTY)

County Offaly, formerly called King's County, was part of Hy Laighois, which included modern county Laois. The part encompassing county Offaly was called Hy Falgis or Offalia. The southern part of the county was part of Ely O'Carroll, or Hy Leigh, and was ruled by the O'Carroll clan. O'Conor Faly controlled the eastern part of the county. Lesser clans or septs included O'Malone, McCoghlan, O'Flattery, O'Rigney, McCoolahan, O'Mooney, O'Hennessy, McColgan, O'Fallon, O'Bergin, O'Molloy, O'Holohan, O'Flanagan, O'Dooly, O'Bannon, McGuilfoyle, McCorcoran, and O'Riordan.
