County Roscommon was, in ancient times, part of the region called Ui Briuin Ai, with a division in the south being referred to as Delbria. The Northwestern part of the county belonged to the McDermot clan, but mostly the area was under control of two O'Conor clans, O'Conor Don and O'Conor Rua. Lesser clans or septs in the region included O'Lavan, O'Molloy, O'Mullaney, O'Feeheny, French, O'Giblin, McGreevy, McWeeney, O'Beirne, O'Duignan, McBrannon, O'Mulvihill, O'Flanagan, O'Cooney, O'Gormley, O'Connellan, O'Flynn, O'Murphy, McAneeny, O'Mulrenan, O'Mulherin, O'Duffy, O'Mulconry, McQuilly, O'Hanley, Hayes, Dillon, McDowell, McGeraghty, McGlynn, O'Mulready, McKeagh, O'Casey, O'Murray, O'Fallon, and O'Mulkerran.
