County Tyrone was known in ancient
times as Cineal Eoghain but was often
called Tyr-Owen, from which the name
is derived. This was the territory of the
O'Nial or O'Neill clan, arguably the
most powerful of the Ulster clans.
Lesser clans or septs included O'Cahan,
O'Quinney, O'Lunney, O'Mellan,
O'Henry, McShane, McNamee,
O'Devlin, O'Hagan, O'Quinn, O'Hamil,
McGinity, McGilmartin, O'Donnelly,
O'Murphy, O'Laverty, O'Corry, Hayes,
and McCreehan.
