This was the western part of the ancient province of Meath, and was called Eircamhoin meaning "the Western Division." This area was peripheral to several major clan holdings, such as the O'Conor Faly, O'Reilly, and O'Farrell, but mostly it was occupied by lesser clans or septs, such as Nugent, FitzSimon, Dease, O'Curry, O'Melaghlin, O'Growney, McCarron, Dillon, McAuley, O'Carberry, McGee, Dalton, O'Daly, Tuite, Tyrell, McGeoghegan, and O'Coffey.
