Inhabitants of this area in the second century A.D., according to Ptolemy, were called the Cauci. Later the area was divided into Ranelagh and Imale, and was likewise divided between two powerful tribes, O'Byrne and O'Toole. Lesser clans or septs included Archibald, O'Cosgrave, O'Cullen, O'Teige, O'Kelly, and O'Gahan.
