ONE OF A THOUSAND: A SERIES OF BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OF ONE
THOUSAND REPRESENTATIVE MEN RESIDENT IN THE COMMONWEALTH OF
MASSACHUSETTS A.D. 1888--'89. Compiled by John C. Rand. Originally
published at Boston 1890. 707 pages.
This useful work gives biographical sketches of over one thousand
Massachusetts men from more than two hundred and fifty different towns.
Hundreds of photographs are included. Each biography begins with
the names of the subject's parents, giving in nearly every case the
mother's maiden name, and in some cases extending the pedigree a
number of generations. The usual biographical details are included,
with an emphasis on employment and contributions to the economy and
growth of the Commonwealth. Only the subjects of biographies are
included in the index, though many others, including parents,
spouses, employers and business acquaintances are mentioned in the
text.
