NEW BEDFORD MASSACHUSETTS, ITS HISTORY, INDUSTRIES, INSTITUTIONS,
AND ATTRACTIONS. William L. Sayer, editor. 318 + xli pages.
Originally published at New Bedford, 1889.
This book was published by the New Bedford Board of Trade, and
includes a complete list of members, numbering about 250. As might
be expected of a book sponsored by such an organization, about one
half of the text is devoted to histories of individual companies--
often with a great deal of biographical information about their
founders. Other chapters include "Pages of History," "The Whale--
Fishery," "Seeing the Sights" and "A Diversity of Subjects." The
last 41 pages are devoted to advertisements of the companies, great and small,
that hoped to prosper through the promotion of the history and attractions of
their fine town.
