GUIDE TO PRINTED BOOKS AND MANUSCRIPTS RELATING TO ENGLISH AND
FOREIGN HERALDRY AND GENEALOGY. By George Gatfield. Originally
published at London, 1892. 646 pages.
Best known to genealogists as "Gatfield's Guide" this is a classic
reference work for the serious genealogist. Containing an estimated
15,000 bibliographic references, it is an essential source of
information on titles published in the last century and even
earlier. Individual sections are included for most European
countries and America, listing local histories and general
references. Each English county has a separate, comprehensive
section. Approximately 6000 family history books and pedigrees are
also listed, from all parts of Europe and America. Many of the
references include the call number or manuscript number, and the
name of at least one institution where the referenced material can
be found. This is the best available guide to rare and scarce
genealogical material, especially for the British Isles.
