AN INDEX TO PRINTED PEDIGREES CONTAINED IN COUNTY AND LOCAL
HISTORIES, THE HERALDS' VISITATIONS, AND IN THE MORE IMPORTANT
GENEALOGICAL COLLECTIONS. By Charles Bridger. 384 pages, printed at
London, 1867.
This useful reference work, usually called simply "Bridger's Index"
by genealogists, lists thousands of references, and gives for each
the surnames covered in that work, with the location or family seat
for each name when known. The work covers primarily England, but
contains some references to Scotland, Wales and Ireland as well.
Since the surnames are listed under the name of each individual
publication or manuscript, there is also a complete surname index
at the end, giving not only the surname, but the location as well.
This is an essential research tool for anyone doing British
genealogy.
