HISTORY OF PISCATAQUIS COUNTY MAINE, FROM ITS EARLIEST SETTLEMENT
TO 1880. By Rev. Amasa Loring. Originally published at Portand,
1880. 304 pages.
As with most local histories, this work amply covers the first
settlers of the area, but in this case the author goes well beyond
just bare facts with many anecdotes and stories relating to early
life in this remote part of Maine. Prominent citizens of each town
are featured, along with professional and educated men, and holders
of public office. The author clearly was a collector of sensational
stories, so that nearly every person who died violently, be it by
drowning, fire, lightning, falling trees or murder, is likely to be
included. Well written compared to many early histories, this work
is of both historical and genealogical interest.
