THE CIVIL WAR LETTERS OF DAN CAMP; 24TH IOWA VOLUNTEERS,
transcribed by Dan B. Camp and edited by Andrew J. Morris. 56
pages. Originally published 1984 at Fort Collins, Colorado. E-publication
reprint 2001.
This work consists of a brief History
of the 24th IA Volunteers,
and transcripts of 27 letters written between 27 Nov 1862 and 15
Sep 1864, by Lt. Dan W. Camp to his family at Mt. Vernon, Iowa. A
fascinating view of one soldiers experience of the Civil War. On 10 September 1863 Dan W. Camp
was commissioned as a Lieutenant, and assigned as Adjutant, so he was well positioned to know
not only the actions of his own unit, but something of the larger picture. Letters
are written from Helena Arkansas, Charlestown Virginia, Halltown Virginia and "near
Baryville" Virginia, but the bulk of the letters were written from Louisiana,
places like Brashear City, New Iberia, Vermillion Bayou, Algiers, Madisonville,
Alexandria, Grand Ecore and Morganza. The author, Dan W. Camp, was severely wounded
at the battle of Winchester Virginia in the fall of 1864, and resigned his commission when the
surgeons declared him unfit for duty.
