IRISH LOCAL NAMES EXPLAINED by P.W. Joyce. Dublin 1902. 107 pgs.
This useful little work gives us the original meanings of thousands
of Irish place names. Most names are derived from geographic or
cultural features of the landscape, described in the Irish language
and transformed through time to their present form. Many place
names are derived from the clans or families who once occupied an
area. As an additional feature, this work includes as an appendix
"Vocabulary of Irish Root Words," giving the meaning of frequently
recurring roots from which place names are formed. Anyone writing
the history of an Irish family will want this work to help them
fill out the background information on the residence for the
family, and to see if any localities in Ireland are named for that
family.
