HISTORY OF THE TOWN AND COUNTY OF THE TOWN OF GALWAY FROM THE
EARLIEST PERIOD TO THE PRESENT TIME. By James Hardiman. Originally
published at Dublin, 1820. xvi + 320 + lvi pages, + maps, indexed.
This classic work of Irish history traces the history of Galway
from mythological times, down through Danish and Norman invasions,
to the date of publication in the early 19th century. Not only does
this work provide a reliable source on Galway's history from about
1600 to 1820, the earlier sections on antiquities and mythological
origins provide a clear view of how Irish history was viewed in the
early 19th century. This book is unusually well documented for such
an early work, with copious references. Initial charters for the
town are printed in full in appendices, along with such
genealogically useful documents as land surveys "with old and new
proprietors" after Cromwellian confiscations. Coats of Arms are
given for the "Tribes of Galway," along with information on the
origins of those families. This is an essential work for anyone
interested in Irish history, or anyone with roots in Galway.
