HISTORY OF CLARE AND THE DALCASSIAN CLANS OF TIPPERARY, LIMERICK,
AND GALWAY. By Rev. P. White. M. H. Gill & Son: Dublin, 1893. xv +
398 pages, plus two oversized maps.
This interesting and rather scarce work is an important reference
for the Irish researcher. Genealogists must be reminded again and
again that their family genealogies will make more sense, and be
easier to trace, if they first get a good grasp on the history of
the area their ancestors lived. Well, here is just such a history
for southwestern Ireland. Also included is much information on the
history of the Dalcassian Septs, especially O'Brien, O'Donnell,
MacNamara, O'Grady and O'Shaughnessy. As was common with books of
that era, each chapter includes a brief description at the
beginning of what one can expect from that chapter. Here are a few
of the subject headings given:
Extent -- Population -- Geographical Features -- Earliest known
History -- Origin and Division of the Thomond Clans -- St. Patrick
blesses Clare -- Mode of election of Chief, Prince, and King --
Danish Invasion -- Mortogh Mor, last Dalcassian Ard Righ -- Diarmid
