A DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS -- Vol. I,
HARTFORD DISTRICT, 1635 -- 1700. By Charles William Manwaring.
Originally published at Hartford, 1904. 669 pages, with
comprehensive index.
This extremely useful work gives researchers of early Connecticut
families ready access to the wills, inventories and distributions
recorded in the Hartford District, originally one of four districts
for the Colony. Occasionally other court and land records have been
included, such as the notice that Robert Bedle is to repay double
for the several thefts he admitted committing, as well as being
severely whipped and branded on the hand. Also listed are those who
owned land in Hartford District prior to 1653, Windsor District
prior to 1653, Wethersfield District prior to 1653, Farmington
District between 1648 and 1657, Fairfield District between 1649 and
1652, and Stratford District. There are three convenient indexes, a
general index, estate index, and names index. The names index
includes both first and last names, cross references to common
alternate spellings, and is very comprehensive, including names
found in lists, as witnesses, adjoining landowners, etc., as well
as principals.
