FULL NAME INDEX TO HOUSEHOLDERS FOR GRIFFITH'S PRIMARY VALUATION,
COUNTY MAYO, IRELAND. By Andrew J. Morris. 322 pages. Published
1989.
This useful resource lists all
of the householders from Griffith's for county Mayo, giving the
full name for each person, a code indicating the parish of
residence, and a reference to the Union and page number, which
allow researchers to go to the exact page where the person is shown
in Griffith's. There are a total of 36,330 names listed, and the
introduction breaks these down by frequency for the first names,
and also lists over 150 of the most common surnames, ranked by
frequency. From the analyses we learn, for example, that Walsh was
the most common surname in Mayo, and that 18% of all males were
named Patrick, while 29% of females were named Mary. There is a map
showing the location of each parish in the county. Because of the
destruction of Census records for Ireland, Griffith's Valuation is
the nearest thing to a head of household census left in existence
for mid 19th century Ireland. This index makes that information
much more accessible for County Mayo. See 0062 for
the actual records.
