SCOTCH IRISH PIONEERS IN ULSTER AND AMERICA. By Charles Knowles
Bolton. 398 pages, indexed. Originally published at Boston 1910. E-publication reprint 2001.
This useful work traces the emigration of Scots Irish from Northern
Ireland to the American colonies during the 1700's. The religious,
political and economic lives of these colonists are examined, both
in Ireland and America. This work does not deal in general terms
with the emigrants, but gives specific examples by name of families
that made the journey, the ships they sailed and the places they
settled. Nor is their point of origin ignored, the places in Ulster
they emigrated from is not only named, but described in detail,
showing the reasons behind emigration as well as the circumstances
of life in Ireland at the time. Of particular interest to
genealogists is an appendix that lists over 1200 families, and
gives the place of origin in Ireland for those families. Everyone
with Scots Irish ancestry will find this work of interest.
