FOREIGN PROTESTANTS AND ALIENS, (mostly Huguenots) RESIDENT
IN ENGLAND 1618-1688. By Wm. Durrant Cooper, 1862. 119 pages,
indexed.
This valuable resource gives the names, place of residence, (and
in some cases the occupation) of thousands of resident aliens in
England in the 17th century. The introduction provides the
historical context for the preparation of these lists of resident
foreigners.
Most of the names given in this source are simply lists,
sometimes by occupation but more often by location. There are some
citations, however, that are more detailed, such as this one:
John Jacobb als Van de Stat, whoe professeth pracktize in
Phisick, plantinge and gardening; also he occupieth some Marshland
in Romney Marsh, and manureth the same with sheepe, and some other
land hee soweth with flax; hee had a stranger father, and (as he
saith) was borne in Flaunders.
