This work traces some of the descendants of Garret Cornelissen Van
Nieuwkercke, who arrived in New York in 1659, with his wife
Chieltje Cornelis and son Cornelis. The surname was eventually
simplified to Newkirk. The Hamilton line begins with Robert
Hamilton, who emigrated from Ireland with his wife about 1772. They
had five daughters and one son after arriving in this country, and
lived in Laurens County, South Carolina. The Bayless line commences
with John Bayless, who was born in England in 1617, probably of
Huguenot ancestry. His descendants lived in New York and New
Jersey. Some of the main allied lines include: Amos, Austin, Baker,
Beasley, Bell, Benson, Blackford, Butler, Chapman, Coleman, David,
Ensminger, Ertel, Fry, Garee, Garthwaite, Goble, Harrell, Hendrix,
Honey, Kiser, Lane, Logan, Lord, McBride, McCormack, Miller,
Newhouse, Nite, Oldham, Rich, Rigdon, Roseberry, Ross, Shields,
Showalter, Smith, Snider, Straughan, Tarkington, Vandament, Wikoff
and Williams.
