HANDBOOK OF HARTWELL GENEALOGY, 1636 -- 1887. By L. W. Densmore.
197 pages. Originally published at Boston, 1887. Reproduced on two
microfiche 1988.
The subtitle of this book is a pretty good indication of its
contents, stating that it is: "An Account of the Descendants of
William Hartwell of Concord Mass., and Allied Families of Bellows,
Cummings, Gibson, Hill, Johnson, Jones, Kendall, Lakin, Luce,
Melvin, Russell, Stiles, Stow, Tucker, Wood, Winchell, Williams and
many others." William Hartwell was born in England about 1613, and
was one of the first settlers in Concord, arriving there by 1636,
the year after it was founded. He died in 1690. This book traces
both male and female lines, down, in so far as it was possible, to
the time of publication -- extending in some cases to the eleventh
generation. Many thousands of individuals from all across the
United States are included in this work, but it not indexed so
finding a particular individual can be time consuming. Some of the
allied lines include Alison, Allerton, Ashby, Bradford, Carter,
Castle, Chapman, Cummings, Dinsmore, Eayrs, Fenno, Fletcher,
Foster, French, Gibson, Gill, Green, Grimes, Hill, Holden, Johnson,
Kendall, Lakin, Mansfield, McMahon, Monroe, Newton, Parker, Phelps,
Rice, Rolfe, Scofield, Sebring, Smith, Stearns, Stiles, Stow,
Tarbell, Tucker, Tyler, Wakeman, Winchell, Wood and Wyman.
