AN HISTORICAL ACCOUNT OF THE MacDONNELLS OF ANTRIM, INCLUDING
NOTICES OF SOME OTHER SEPTS, IRISH AND SCOTTISH. By Rev. George
Hill. 510 pages, indexed. Originally published at Belfast, Ireland,
in 1873. Reproduced 1989 on six microfiche.
This genealogy of the MacDonnell family begins with the Irish
origins of the sept, or clan, in about the fifth century. Early in
the sixth century some of them founded a kingdom in Scotland, from
whom descend the Scottish Clan Donnell. Almost a thousand years
later these Scottish Donnells returned to Ireland, and founded the
County Antrim MacDonnells, among whom were the Earls of Antrim. In
this work can be found information about the family continuing into
the early 19th century, including some branches that spread to
other parts of Ireland. The MacDonnells were of such importance to
the history of Ulster and especially Antrim, that this account of
the history of the family includes accounts of most of the major
historical developments in the region. Members of most of the
leading families of Ulster are also mentioned in this work, in some
cases including a great deal of genealogical detail. A complete
index provides easy access to this large collection of information.
