Morris's of County Mayo

Over the years I have accumulated many notes of Morris families of county Mayo, ever hoping to come across my own ancestors. To date, I've had no luck tracing the ancestry of my gr-grandfather, George Morris, but hope the many other Morris references I've noted will be of interest to others. Please contact me if you have any data on Morris families in Mayo, so that I can add your information to this collection. Andrew J. Morris

From:Memoirs of My Family: Together With Some Researches Into the Early History of the Morris Families of Tipperary, Galway and Mayo. By E. Naomi Chapman, privately printed 1928, Frome & London.

NOTE: I would very much like to get a copy of this book, all I have are the pedigree charts and a few notes I took from a brief examination of the text, from which the information below is transcribed. Because the Mayo line ties in with the County Galway and County Tippeary Morris families I've included them all here, along with their earliest known ancestors.

1. __ de Mareis of Hunspill-Mareis married ca. 1155 Lucia, dau. of Sir Alexander de Alneto. They had two sons [2, 3] (Red Bk. of Bath)

2. Richard de Mareis came with Strongbow to Ireland in 1170. (Song of Dermot, I, 1811)

3. Jordan de Mareis, Knt. of Hunspill Mareis married Agnes de Warenne and they had three sons [4, 5, 6] (Red Book of Bath)

4. William de Marisco, son and heir of Sir Jordan, held Hunspill Mareis and Lundy, mentioned 1199-1204. d.s.p.

5. Geoffrey de Marisco obtained lands in County Limerick in 1200. Justiciar of Ireland 1215-1221 and 1226-1228, he was married three times. Known children include six sons [7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12] and one daughter [13].

6. Jordan de Marisco held lands at Templemore and latteragh, County Tipperary, and died in 1234, leaving behind two sons [14, 15]

7. William de Marisco, son and heir to Geoffrey, held the manor of Tipperary. He married Matilda, niece of Archbishop Henry de Londres and had two sons [16, 17]. Was hanged in 1242.

8. Walter de Marisco, mentioned as a hostage for his father in 1215, was imprisoned in 1234. Had one son, also named Walter, who died in 1299 (p. 243 Justiciary Roll)

9. Henry de Marisco, mentioned as a hostage for his father in 1215.

10. Thomas de Marisco, mentioned as a hostage for his father in 1220.

11. John de Marisco had his lands seized by the throne in 1234 and 1242, but they were restored in 1244. He married Mabel, granddaughter of Richard de Burgh, and they had a son [18].

12. Robert de Marisco married the daughter of Walter de Ridelsford. His only child, daughter and heiress Christiana de Mareis, born in 1240 -- the same year Robert died. She was referred to as "The King's Cousin" and owned Headford Castle. (Temp. Ed. I)

13. Joan de Marisco married ca. 1222 Theobald Butler II, who died 1230. Their offspring included the Earls of Ormonde.

14. William de Marisco, son and heir to Jordan, obtained a grant of a market at Latteragh (Co. Tipperary) in 1254. He died in 1284. His son and heir John de Marisco succeeded to the lands at Templemore and Latteragh.

15. Richard de Marisco, of whom no further information is given.

16. William de Marisco, d.s.p. 1281 or 1282 (Collinson)

17. Hugh de Marisco d.s.p. 1312, his heir was his first cousin Herbert [18]

18. Herbert de Marisco, son and heir of John, claimed the Manor of Tipperary as great-grandson of Jordon in 1312 (Plea Roll Ir. 6 Ed. II m. 13.) See Chartulary of St. Mary's Abbey, Dublin, Vol. ii, p. xxiii. note. He married a daughter of Walter de la Haye and has a son [19]. Herbert died in 1327 (Collinson)

19. Stephen de Marisco, Knt., son and heir of Herbert, died 1372 or 1373 when his heir was James, 2nd Earl of Ormonde.

From another chart:

1. __ Morris married Margaret Lynch, the daughter of Andrew Lynch. She was living in 1702 when she is mentioned in the will of her son William. They had five sons [2, 3, 4, 5, 6] and a daughter [7]

2. Peter Morris of Galway, merchant, married Joan. His will dated 29 Nov 1698 was proved 7 Dec 1698. The Coat of Arms appearing the his will was the same as that depicted on the old Map of Galway of 1681:

Coat. Azure, a halbert surmounted by a lance in saltire between four culverines fessways, or, on a chief arg a fleur-de-lys between two trunks of trees couped and readicated sable. Crest. A fleur-de-lys, or.
Peter and Joan had two sons and two daughters. William Morris, the eldest son, witnessed his uncle William's will in 1702. The other son was Marcus Morris. Daughter Margaret Morris married Maurice Lynch and had a son Harvey Lynch. The other daughter, Mary Morris, married Ignatius Lynch who died in 1728.

3. William Morris of Galway, merchant, married Elizabeth Butler, daughter of Richard Butler, merchant of Galway, and sister to John Butler. They had a son Peter Morris, born 1698 and probably died before 1702, and another child was expected when William died in 1702. His will, dated 14 May 1702 was proved 10 June 1702.

4. Thomas Morris married and had two children, William Morris of Dublin, living in 1747, and Catherine Morris who married William Hinde of Eyrecourt, Co. Galway and had a son Harvey Hinde.

5. John Morris, married and had two daughters, Anne and Julia. He died before 1745. Julia married Michael or John Lynch, and died ca. 1713 - 1716 leaving a daughter who married James Skerrett.

6. Hervey Morris of Galway, merchant, married Mary Bodkin. His will describes him as a farmer, of Fonagh, and is dated 17 Dec 1720, proved 8 Nov 1721. Mary (Bodkin) Morris's will, dated 24 Nov 1747, proved 15 Feb 1748 leaves a legacy to Mary, daughter of Captain Richard Morris. This Richard Morris was probably a son of either Thomas [4] or John [5] and he is perhaps to be identified with Richard Morris of Lissenisky (Ballinrobe parish, Co. Mayo) whose Tuam will dated 1765 refers to his eldest son Thady Morris and his "other children."

7. Elinor Morris married William Lynch, and had Elinor, Mary and Juggy Lynch. Juggy Lynch married Patrick Morris [see #1 in next chart].

Another chart:

1. Patrick Morris of Galway Town married Juggy Lynch [see 7 in previous chart]. He had a brother Martin and a sister Julia who married a Kean. Patrick and Juggy had a son [2] and two daughters, Julia Morris and Mary Morris. Mary died in a convent in 1783. Patrick's will, 1777, is sealed with the "Lion Rampant" indicating he was "of the Tribe." The will of another Patrick Morris, a cousin, was proved in 1768 and names his wife Eleanor, brother Edmund, and cousins Honor Morris, Edmund Morris, Elizabeth Brown, Edward Fallen and Rose Owens.

2. James Patrick Morris, flourmiller of Galway Town, married Julia Blake of Merlin Park. He bought lands of Ballyhine, Co. Mayo in 1800. His will was proved in 1826, and left a large legacy to Mrs. Elinor Power. The will was witnessed by James Edward and Michael Killean. James Patrick Morris and Julia had six children, Patrick, Jeffrey, Martin, Julia (who married Patrick J. Burke of Galway), Mary (who died without issue), and William.
