Dating Portraits - Seated Figure

As stated before, portrait styles are probably the least reliable means of dating photographs. Seated figures come in a wide variety of poses, with some sideways to the camera, and others at an angle or facing directly into the camera, some showing only the upper body, others full length.

Dating:

Darrah only lists seated figures for the period 1860-70, and uses that characteristic in combination with background information to narrow the range. There are plenty of later seated figures, perhaps he found them of no value in dating the photos.

Observations:

I don't think the seated pose, in itself, can be relegated to any particular time period.
