Dating Portraits - Background Drape/Column

Columns, if large, are often placed at the edge of the image area, while shorter pedestals are often in the foreground. Drapes may cover the entire background, or only one side, often trailing off at an angle.

Dating:

Darrah suggest that a background drape behind a seated figure suggest a date of 1860-68, while a drape or column behind a standing figure yields the same date range - 1860-68.

Observations:

It seems likely that these props continued to be used much later by some photographers.
