Dating Portraits - Painted Background

The introduction of fancy painted backgrounds in the portrait studio allowed a wide variety of scenes to be used. A forest or stream in the background, and fence or bicycle in the foreground, give depth to the image.

Dating:

Darrah suggest dates anywhere from 1861 to 1890 for painted backgrounds.

Observations:

As our examples show, the painted background continued to be used well into this century, so it is really too persistent to be of much help for dating photos.
