Picture 18

Description:

This is a tintype mounted on a carte de visite. The card, .4mm thick, has an oval opening, 25mm x 35mm, through which the tintype shows. The tintype is held in place by a thin piece of paper glued over it. The oval opening is framed by an ornate picture-frame motife embossed in the card. At the bottom of the front of the card is printed "Patent Applied For". Inscribed in ink on back: "Sara Crawford McCombs, Aug 21st 1843, Dec. 23rd, 1875". This is a tiny dot of gilt added to the clasp at her neck (barely visible in this reproduction), and rouge for cheeks and lips.
